Rising Minds Counselling and Psychotherapy

Cancer support

A diagnosis touches more than one life

Virtual cancer counselling across British Columbia and Ontario — we work with cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and families impacted by cancer.

Whether you’re facing cancer yourself or supporting someone you love, there can be space here for what this experience asks of you, too.

WHEREVER YOU ARE ON THE JOURNEY

Are you facing cancer, caring for someone you love, adjusting to life after cancer, or grieving a loss?

You don’t have to navigate it alone.

Cancer affects more than physical health. It can reshape your relationships, your sense of self, and the way you imagine the future — for both the person diagnosed and those who love them.

At Rising Minds, you’ll find compassionate support to help you navigate the emotional impact of cancer, wherever you are in the journey.

You don’t have to hold it all together. You don’t have to have all the answers. You deserve a space where you can simply be.

Emotional support

What we can work through together

We make space for the parts that often go unspoken — not just “staying positive,” but the full reality of what cancer brings up.

Diagnosis & Treatment

Navigating the Weight of Cancer

A cancer diagnosis can bring fear, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion. Counselling offers space to process what you’re experiencing, navigate treatment challenges, and explore what you need along the way—without pressure to be strong or positive all the time.

caregiver

Caring for Yourself While Caring for Others

Supporting someone with cancer can be emotionally and physically demanding. Counselling offers space to explore exhaustion, guilt, worry, and the often unspoken challenges of caregiving, while making room for your own needs, wellbeing, and emotional support.

Survivorship & Identity

Finding Yourself Beyond Cancer

Life after cancer treatment can bring unexpected emotions and challenges. Counselling offers space to explore lingering fears, changes in identity and relationships, and the uncertainty of what comes next, while helping you reconnect with yourself and what matters most.

Couples & Families

Navigating Cancer Together

Cancer can affect relationships, family roles, communication, and connection. Counselling offers a supportive space to explore different emotions and needs, navigate changing family dynamics, and find ways to communicate, understand, and support one another through uncertainty.

Grief & Loss

Making Space for Grief

Cancer can bring many forms of loss, including changes to health, independence, relationships, and hopes for the future. Counselling offers a compassionate space to acknowledge these experiences, process difficult emotions, and explore what grief means for you.

Terminal Prognosis

Finding Meaning in the Time Ahead

Facing a terminal prognosis can bring profound uncertainty, fear, and difficult questions. Counselling offers a compassionate space to explore what matters most, navigate conversations with loved ones, and consider questions of meaning, legacy, dignity, and living on your own terms.

Questions

Cancer Support FAQs

◆
Can you support individuals, couples, and families affected by cancer?

Yes. Cancer can affect the entire family, and Rising Minds offers individual, couples, and family counselling for people navigating the emotional and relational impact of cancer.

The type of therapeutic relationship is established at the outset. When Erica is working with someone individually, she maintains that individual therapeutic relationship rather than also becoming the individual, couples, or family therapist for people closely connected to that client.

If a partner, caregiver, or family member would benefit from their own counselling, Erica can help connect them with appropriate resources or provide referrals to another therapist, allowing each person to have a confidential and independent space for support.

No. Cancer support counselling at Rising Minds focuses on emotional and relational support and is separate from medical advice, treatment decisions, or health recommendations.

If you need medical or other specialized professional guidance related to your diagnosis or treatment, Erica can encourage you to connect with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Coverage may be available through extended health benefits, depending on your individual plan and the therapist’s professional designation. Please check directly with your insurer. Receipts are provided for reimbursement.

Looking for non-psychotherapy health coaching or advocacy support? These services are offered separately through Rise Today Consulting and are distinct from counselling and psychotherapy at Rising Minds.

Trauma-Informed and Culturally Responsive Care

Our approach is grounded in trauma-informed, culturally responsive care, offering a welcoming space where you can feel respected, supported, and valued for who you are.

You don't have to be strong all the time

Here, you can simply be supported.

You might be newly diagnosed and overwhelmed, a caregiver running on empty, a family member who doesn’t know how to help, or a survivor still finding your footing after treatment. You don’t need to be at your breaking point to seek support. You can begin wherever you are.
